2013 Ford Mustang GT

It’s official, I have found my next new car purchase. I had been reading about the new 2013 Ford Mustang GT for quite some time. However there’s a big difference between reading about it and driving it. Last week at the press event (Western Automotive Journalists) I finally had my chance to jump behind the wheel of Ford’s stellar pony car. Now keep in mind that my case is a bit different then most as I’ve been on the lookout for a car that can act as a Jack-of-all-trades for quite sometime. I wanted a sub-35k price tag, something that can be driven everyday, and then, to top it off, this beastie needs to be able to pull double duty as a track day weapon on the weekends.

Let me just say that the Mustang does not disappoint. The GT I drove was equipped with Ford’s 5.0-Liter V8 that makes 420 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque, a six-speed manual and the Brembo package which includes 14″ rotors and Brembo calipers. First off the cars got motor to spare, it’ll rev to 7,000 rpm all day long without ever dropping off from its peak torque curve, in short, it’s a stump puller. The steering felt a little vague in the beginning, but after about a half a lap I got over it. As for the Brembo brakes, these suckers rock. All together it was a pretty impressive package, however if you’re going to track it make sure to get the track pack as I did notice the engine oil temp creeping up there. The track pack will get you the bigger radiator, oil cooler and 3.73 torsion differential from the Boss 302. It also comes shod with Pirelli P Zero tires which did a good job of keeping me planted.

What’s really amazing is that this simply didn’t feel like a live-axle car. Handling was crisp and clean, braking was great and acceleration downright fantastic. Now obviously this is just a short quickie review, but rest assured you’ll be getting the full one soon, as my Mustang will be here in about 6-8 weeks! BOOYA!
