Lancia Stratos

The Lamborghini Countach, Ferrari Enzo and this, the Lancia Stratos. Three cars that I’d love to have in my fantasy garage. Now where the Countach and Enzo are simply unobtainable, the Lancia, or should I say Lister Bell STR Lancia replica, can be had for around £30k. Is it worth it? Check out the following video and then decide…

The Uncompromising Legendary Lancia Stratos

Lancia Stratos

The Lancia Stratos is a unicorn. It’s one of those rare beasts that we all hope exists, but since we never see them, we view them only in our imaginations. It was powered by the same V6 engine found in the Ferrari 246 Dino and was built specifically to run and win in WRC. Something it did very well. Phillip Toledano is the owner of this stunning blue Stratos. For him it was a dream come true and for us, it’s the car that’s lived in our imaginations forever. Check it out after the jump.

Carlisle Import and Kit Nationals 2011

Triumph TR4 and TR3

BCW MG TD Replica
Recently, I attended the show at the Carlisle Fairgrounds in Pennsylvania. Held every May, this show features a vast array of meticulously maintained classic British, European and Japanese cars, exemplary examples of their more modern kin, as well as a beautiful collection of kit cars.  As far as sheer variety in makes, models and years, hands down, this show can’t be beat.

This has become something of an annual treat for me as I can think of few better ways to spend a weekend than by gazing at a gleaming sea of jaw-droppingly stunning automobiles, many of which I guarantee you won’t find at other shows. Plus, participation is open to anyone with an import or a kit car – all you have to do is register, make your car pretty and show up. It’s a great opportunity to display your cherished ride and meet other aficionados of your favorite marques.

I used to come down to show my Saab and hang out with the Saab contingent that makes it out every year. But even though I have a Subaru now, it’s just so much fun that I continue to make the trip to Carlisle (my WRX was parked over by the lone DeLorean, if you happened to be there). Volvo, BMW and Audi clubs also traditionally have a large showing so the weekend is packed with the cars you love, cars you haven’t seen before, your friends from the forums, barbeques – it’s a good time for everyone.  So, if you’re not too far out from Pennsylvania, I definitely recommend heading out there next May to check out the Carlisle Import and Kit Nationals. To tide you over, provided for your viewing pleasure are some of my favorite cars of the weekend. Enjoy!

Quasimodo’s Convertible: Lancia Delta Chop-top

Posted in Custom, Featured, Lancia by Dustin Driver | April 3rd, 2011 | Leave a Reply |

There are many automotive atrocities, plenty of ill-conceived motorcar mutations created by madmen. Way back in the heyday of Italian industrialism, super-magnate and fashionista Gianni Agnelli had some guys at Zagato chop the top off the infamous Lancia Delta to create the monstrous Delta Cabrio. Now the guys at a shop called HF Il Cavallino have spawned another one. Read More…

2011 Lancia Stratos

We’ve been drooling over the new Lancia Stratos ever since we first laid eyes on it at the end of last year. Based on a Ferrari F430 Scuderia, the Stratos is one of those rare machines that childhood automotive dreams are made of. It’s small, mid-engine, light-weight and unbelievably nimble. It’s also a complete stunner from a visual perspective as well. The rebirth of the Lancia Stratos was conceived by German businessman Michael Stoschek along with Pininfarina. Originally the car was slated to be a one-off unit, but now with so much interest in the new Stratos we may just be seeing more of them. According to there are at least 40 potential customers who have shown interest in the Stratos since its release to the public. However, both Stoschek and Pininfarina think that this number will drastically increase when reviews of the car surface in the coming months.

Perfect Automotive Union: Saab and Lancia

Posted in Fiat, Lancia, Saab by Dustin Driver | October 17th, 2010 | 1 Response |

Yes, it's a Saab.

In the ’80s, two of the world’s most wonderfully quirky car companies had a tryst. Saab and Lancia (Fiat) locked eyes across Europe and fell madly in love. Or maybe Lancia had too much brännvin at a bar in Stockholm and took Saab back to its hotel room. Either way, the two swapped engineering expertise and design to create a platform that underpinned hundreds of thousands of European cars. The venture was known as the Type 4 Project and the resulting chassis was used in the Saab 9000, Fiat Croma, Lancia Thema, and Alfa Romeo 164. As part of the deal, Saab got to sell Lancia Deltas in Sweden, rebadged as the Saab 600 (pictured above). Saab designer also worked with legendary Italian automotive designer  to pen the Saab 9000. If only the relationship could have extended beyond that one-night stand. Just think of the incredibly awesome and explosively unreliable automobiles we’d have today.

Test and Tune with the new Lancia Stratos.

Usually when a bunch of Italians are seen together there is generally one of three things happening. The first and most common is that they all just stand around discussing food and drinking coffee. The second is that they’ve all decided that they don’t like someone and well, that can sometimes wind up messy. Option three is usually my favorite though. You see that’s when these passionate people from the motherland congregate at a raceway and try to decide how to make their beautifully designed sports cars go really really fast. The above video illustrates option three perfectly as it shows Tiago Monteiro, the former F1 driver putting the chassis of the new Lancia Stratos through its paces at the Balooco test track in Italy. Not a bad gig if you ask me…

Lancia Stratos Video makes us hot with anticipation!

The first time I’d ever heard about the Lancia Stratos was way back in the early 1980’s in a Choose Your Own Adventure book called The Race Forever. These books would allow you to literally pick from multiple outcomes based on how you thought the story was going up until that point. In The Race Forever I simply remember the author mentioning the Lancia Stratos and for whatever the reason it stuck in my head until this day. Well, that was then and this is now and according to the above video the “now” seems like it’s going to be a lot more fun than the “then”… confusing isn’t it. Anyway, the new Lancia Stratos is powered by the same 483 hp mill as the Ferrari F430 which promises to make for some extreme excitement when this little pocket rocket hits the streets. The above video is entirely in German, but I did manage to make out the phrase “go-kart” which, as a car guy is very promising.

The Cutaway Car Art Of Shin Yoshikawa

Shin Yoshikawa is a man of many talents. He’s a photojournalist, he’s a car collector and he plays the piano rather well, too. Perhaps his most remarkable skill, however, is his ability to see beneath the skin of a car and reproduce, by hand, pen and ink artwork of classic and modern cars. Yoshikawa has quite a body of work, and has drawn both street and racing cars from over 20 different manufacturers. His art appears at the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles and the Blackhawk Museum in Danville, and Yoshikawa regularly attends art exhibitions from coast to coast.

Lancia Stratos Redux

Posted in Concept Cars, Custom, Lancia, Rally by Dustin Driver | August 4th, 2010 | 1 Response |

Car spies nabbed these shots of a one-off Lancia Stratos tribute car lapping Fiat’s Circuito di Balocco test track in Italy. Apparently the car is being built for an absurdly wealthy European industrialist. It share the original’s striking curved windshield and rakish stance, but has recessed headlights like the 2005 NewStratos concept car. It is absolutely stunning. Except the wheels. Huge rims and rubber band tires don’t do the car justice. It needs some sidewall, some bulgey radials to invoke the car’s rich rally roots. Other than that, it’s perfect. Hopefully we’ll see more of the ride when it hits the streets. In fact, I’d love to fly out to Italy to do a photo shoot. Whaddya say, Mr. Industrialist? Hit the jump for another pic.
