Hyundai To Take The Veloster Racing

Posted in Hyundai, RallyCross by Kurt Ernst | February 10th, 2011 | 1 Response |

Hyundai is positioning the new Veloster as their “sporty” coupe aimed at Generation Y. The challenge they face is getting the car noticed above the others in the coupe or hot hatch segments, so Hyundai is reverting to age old wisdom: win on Sunday, sell on Monday. Hyundai isn’t going stock car racing (which isn’t big among Gen Y, anyway); instead, they’re going to campaign three Velosters in Rallycross and Summer X Games competition. Want to see a Veloster fly? Check out the video below.

Hyundai will run a total of three cars in competition. The first is the 500 horsepower, AWD version built by Rhys Millen Racing (RMR) and featured in this video. This car will run in the AWD class and will compete for the 2011 U.S. Rallycross Championship. RMR is building a second AWD car, to be shared by Marcus Dodd and Robbie Madison , who will also compete in the Summer X games. A third, 2wd Veloster will be built for Rallycross competition, but this one will be driven by yet-to-be-announced celebrity drivers. I’m waiting for the call from Hyundai to drive the car, since I’m almost a C-List celebrity in Montgomery, Alabama and got a vote for president of the United States in the 2000 election. Just let me know if I need to bring my own Nomex suit.
